Ambrose Fox

A tithable was a person for whom a head tax was to be paid. The definition varies over time and place, but generally included members of the potentially productive labor force.
A poll tax is a tax levied on every poll. The definition of a poll also varied, but was generally a man of legal age.

Loudoun County is part of Northern Neck of Virginia. Settling of the Loudoun area began between 1725 and 1730. Settlers came from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland.

Ambrose Fox was born in 1737 in Kingwood, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He was the son of George and Mary Fox.

When his father died, he inherited half of his land except ten acres which went with the mills.

In 1768 he was listed as a waggoner in Loudoun County, Virginia.

In 1774 and 1775 Ambrose was on the tithable list and had two tithables.

In 1778 he witnessed an indenture between the Foxes and Jonas Clapman. Jonas paid them 800£ for 500 acres in Loudoun County.

In 1778 he leased 395 acres in Cameron Parish. Cameron Parish was a jurisdiction of the Anglican church in Loudoun County. 

In 1782 he leased another 190 acres in Cameron Parish.

From 1782 to 1787 he was on the tax list of Loudoun County in the 2nd Battalion. From 1788 to 1797, he was in the 3rd Battalion.

In 1785 he assigned the 395 acres to to Thomas Oden and Joseph Fox.

  • Kingwood Township is on the western border of Hunterdon County, New Jersey. It was founded in 1798.
    The Foxes are Mayflower descendants: Samuel Fuller, Hannah Fuller Bonham, Hezekiah Bonham , Amariah Bonham, Christian Bonham Fox, Bonham Fox, Levi Fox, John Newton Fox

    Hunterdon County was originally part of Burlington County, West Jersey. It was set off from Burlington County on March 11, 1714. It included Amwell, Hopewell, and Maidenhead Townships.

    The Dutch were the first Europeans claim land in New Jersey. The region became a territory of England in 1664 when an English fleet sailed into New York Harbor and took control of Fort Amsterdam.
